Thomas Jefferson said that given the choice between government without newspapers and newspapers without government, he would choose to have newspapers.

In medicine we have government without newspapers. Patients cannot find out what they need to know to make informed choices. No one in medicine records or reports the information patients need to know the most. So patients will have to.

Pedophiles in medicine

Where are pedophiles to go these days? The priesthood is out. They are on to pedophiles there. About the only safe place left for pedophiles is healthcare. At least no one will report pedophiles there. In healthcare, turning in a colleague ends your career no matter what the sin. So it almost never is done.

If you do turn in a colleague in healthcare, no one will believe you. And if someone does believe you, no one will investigate it. And if someone tries to investigate it, none of the other witnesses will support you. They will turn on you and you will be the one in trouble and become unemployable and disgraced and sued for defamation. There's no point in ruining your own career. You are the kind of person patients need to have remain in healthcare. Ruining your own career isn't likely to result in eliminating the pedophile anyway.

Besides, most people in healthcare are decent and friendly, aren't they?

That's why healthcare is about the only place left that is respectable, high paying and safe for pedophiles, psychopaths and unfriendly people of all sorts.

Colleagues do not want to end their careers by reporting pedophiles. Pedophiles with MDs. Nurse pedophiles. Physician assistant pedophiles. The wall of silence in medicine protects pedophiles too. Outside and inside of medicine the refusal to entertain negative thoughts about medical professionals protects them. Pedophiles and other miscreants are safe in the silent cushion of the healthcare industry.
