Dr. Allan ZarkinHis lawyer says Zarkin suffers from a brain disease that impairs his judgment. But another hospital gave him new privileges after he was dismissed from Beth Israel. Beth Israel did not report to the state the details of what he had done. Zarkin continued to practice. That is the environment in which physicians work. It does not inhibit them even from intentionally injuring patients. Dr. Zarkin already had been the subject of several previous complaints but was allowed to continue practicing, which is usual. A patient of his recently surfaced saying that ultrasound indicates that she is missing organs that he was not supposed to remove. When she went to other doctors for help, she was told that she had seen Ms. Gedz sue and now, like a shark smelling blood in the water, was circling to see if she could cash in too. This from the person who was supposed to give her an objective diagnosis. Doctors have a strong disinclination to recognize or diagnose damage done by another doctor, which is part of what enabled Dr. James Burt to ruin so many lives. It might have been acceptable to let Zarkin resume practice in an environment where someone would report it if he misbehaved. But there is no such environment in medicine. Aren't medical personnel required to report suspected child abuse? What's so different about patient abuse? Patients are very much like children in terms of their ability to control and understand what is happening to them in healthcare. |
